An empire of genocidal artificial intelligences threatens to overwhelm humanity, held back only by the combined fleets of humanity's lone superpower, the Majesterium. The allied might of the dozens of human systems who owe fealty to the Star King have long stood as a unified bulwark against the Syntharchy...until now. The alliance threatens to unravel when a planned wedding is interrupted by the sudden disappearance of the betrothed princess. This sort of politics used to bore Captain E. Z. Sudden of the light freighter, "Jade Rose" until the most sought after woman in the galaxy falls into his lap. Not knowing who to trust, the pair set out on a journey to the darkest depths of space in search of the one man that can reunite the princess with her king before Civil war erupts and opens the door for a mechanical apocalypse.

This book was highly enjoyable, sweet, and genuinely fun. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked it up, but I’m glad I gave it a try.

The characters are genuine sweethearts, flawed but kind and loving. They stayed consistent throughout even as they grew, and they felt like real people. I found myself rooting them on as the story progressed.

The world-building is fantastic. This author doesn’t use any generic sci-fi settings: every planet or station they fly to is really weird and cool. I wish he was designing settings for Hollywood and television, because we wouldn’t have so many bland worlds. Some really unique ideas in this story.

A major point knocked off a star: A large number of frequent typos. This book needed some serious proofreading. It got distracting after a while. My hope is the author does another proofread and updates the kindle version just as a quality of life thing for his future readers.
EDIT: The author has updated the novel and removed this issue, so the overall score was increased. Great customer service.

Other than that, this book was solid and enjoyable. I’d feel comfortable using it as a bedtime story for older kids, maybe 9+ just because of some vaguely violent background concepts, though Doctor Who is far worse.

Sudden Rescue Suddenverse Jon Mollison 9781520843575 Books Reviews

Long haul freighter captain E Z Sudden, alone except for his on-board AI, finds some abandoned cargo containers in interplanetary space. He’d rather just haul cargo, but rises to the challenge the containers represent, and in the process, becomes a hero.

This was fun. Good storyline, interesting and unique characters (the safe cracker is especially good), villains who need a good case of getting shot. There is a sequel available, so there is more after you finish this book.
Sudden Rescue, released just under a year ago, starts with an archetype we're all very familiar with, the independent space hauler who's not afraid to shade the finer points of smuggling law. Captain E. Z. Sudden would be right at home with the likes of Han Solo and Malcolm Reynolds, dodging space pirates and overbearing AI empires until he is suddenly thrust into galactic politics with the recovery of some lost cargo containers, one of which contains a member of the local space nobility named Karenina. When it is revealed that she was on her way to a wedding that could make or break the human alliance against the aforementioned AI, she and Sudden must embark on a journey through treacherous peril and exotic, imaginative locations to stop a terrible war.

In addition, of course, to being a fun, adventure-filled work that rests on sound Christian principles without being preachy, the heroes are all heroic, in every sense of the world, and their sense of optimism makes a fine alternative to the too often nihilistic spirit present in many SF works today.
EZ Sudden is a long haul freighter pilot who is just trying to make a mostly honest living lugging cargoes across the deeps of space. It's not easy, what with pirates, a genocidal robot race and the profit-choking regulations of guild-like trade associations to contend with. When he stumbles across the debris left behind by an exploded imperial caravel, Sudden hopes that there will be something among what he salvages that can change his luck. Well, there is and it's more than he could have imagined.

EZ finds himself Sudden-ly neck deep in imperial intrigue with a target on his back!

Sudden Rescue is a good ol' romp of a read that entertains from first page to last.
Sudden Rescue is a rush of spacefaring fun, a mish-mash of princesses and robots and evil AI coexisting with rough-and-tumble space colonies and a hero who is essentially a long-haul driver in space. And not only that, it's FUN.

Jon has created a world reminiscent of the best bits of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, just without the nihilism. That's right Our protagonist E.Z. Sudden is a bonafide, rough around the edges hero. Sudden Rescue also reminds me of the Space Quest series of computer games in that a slightly tongue-in-cheek universe with dark undercurrents is saved by a ne'er do well who actually wants to do good.

Give Sudden Rescue a shot if you're into anything that involves space, heroes, or heroes in space. You'll have a blast.
After encounters with space pirates and Syntharcy metal men crater the profitability of space trucker E. Z. Sudden’s latest delivery, the well-worn captain salvages four safe boxes from the wreckage of a recent Synth attack to offset his costs. The contents only bring more trouble, as inside is Karenina, a princess of the Majesterium, who is late to her own wedding – and the key to stopping an impending war between the Syntharcy and the Majesterium. Pursued by Synths and pirates, Sudden must get Karenina back to her family, even if it means flying through a Syntharcy harvester fleet to do so.

Science fiction tends to forget the middle-aged men that fall between the young bucks and the grandfather mentors so beloved of the genre. Also lost in the constant march of chosen ones, rogues, aristocratic rakes, and military men is the regular joe grinding out his living one shift at a time. Space trucker E. Z. Sudden fills this unique niche, a more experienced (and less gullible) Northwest Smith more concerned with making his delivery schedule than chasing adventure and renown. But when adventure finds him, Sudden rises to the challenge, returning Karenina to her family because it is the right thing to do and not for reward. Sudden Rescue is a fun adventure in the pattern of the classic pulps, complete with the plot twists and glimpses into wider mysteries. Hopefully there will be more stories in this setting.
